Haitian Children - Resources

Due to the catastrophic conditions in Haiti, many schools in New York are getting new entrants from that country.  Most of the children and youth displaced by the earthquakes in Haiti are eligible for protection under the McKinney-Vento Act and are entitled to enrollment in school even if they lack the documents normally needed, including proof of immunization.  The McKinney-Vento Liaison in each district is responsible for making eligibility determinations on a case-by-case basis.

Schools with questions related to this concern are being directed to call the numbers below at the State Education Department and the State Technical and Education Assistance Center for Homeless Students (NYS-TEACHS) for assistance with the Haitian children.

Melanie Faby, Program Associate for Homeless Education at the State Education Department, (518) 473-0295

   NYS-TEACHS, (800) 388-2014 or visit http://nysteachs.org/info-topic/haiti.html

  • The following “tips” are from nurses all around the state and other ideas gathered from school nurses around the country.  Please use the hints and tips you like – this is a fun list of ideas, not state mandated procedures.  As always, use nursing judgment based on your population and setting before instituting a new procedure and be sure it is approved by your school’s medical director.
